Governor Gretchen Whitmer has appointed James H. Townsend as the new chair of the Michigan Gaming Control Board. The position becomes effective on August 1, coinciding with the scheduled departure of current chair Jim Ananich.Townsend, a Royal Oak resident, will assume the role to maintain Democratic representation on the commission. The board regulates the state's casino operations, sports wagering markets, and online gaming platforms. His tenure will focus on enforcing existing gaming legislation and overseeing routine compliance audits.
The appointment follows the conclusion of Ananich's service on the commission. Michigan gaming board members serve fixed terms established by state statute, with leadership rotations handled through gubernatorial nomination.
